Despite the generally dismal tone of this summer, it seems to be ending on a much more positive note.

In five days, I'll finally be of age and ready to start my seventh and final year at Hogwarts.

And guess who is finally home to celebrate it with me? That's right, my silly tourist boyfriend is in Britain once again.

Now if only Marietta and I were on better terms. This is all so different than last year.

I can't believe it's been nearly a week and nobody's mentioned the change in Minister.

But I suppose that goes to show that Hogwarts students are much more concerned with birthdays and hit singles than politics and important news, Vane's obsession over the Chosen One aside.

It's probably a waste of ink, but these journals do provide easy access to popular student opinion, so I might as well ask: what do you think about the new Minister?

He's certainly more pulled together than Fudge, that's for sure. Many people are criticising the way he's dealing with Dumbledore, though -- they aren't on good terms at all. Roger suspects that's bad news for Hogwarts, though seeing as Dumbledore was sacked before the end of term, I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.

I wish we'd shipped out of this city like Vane's family did. My parents seem to think we're somehow safer here -- that a city that's just been bombed has less chance of being attacked since it's already broken. I guess there's some sense in that argument, but I hate looking around and seeing the destruction.

And Marietta's in St. Mungo's and I visited her once but they won't let me go again because "she needs peace and quiet" and "she needs to rest". They don't understand. She needs me.

And Michael's on holiday, can you believe that? Everybody's panicked and miserable and he and his family go on holiday. To America. Where You-Know-Who isn't a threat and there are no Dementors breeding.

And rumor has it You-Know-Who is using Inferi. I can't even wrap my head around how utterly wrong that is. As if death weren't bad enough in the first place, let's completely disrespect the dead and use their bodies for evildoing! It makes me sick.

And I have nowhere to go to, no Owlery to be alone in and not even here, since Mum's home all the time now.

Speaking of which, she's calling me to tea. I do hope she made blueberry scones.

Congratulations, Gryffindor, on your astounding amount of luck.

This doesn't guarantee you the House Cup, however.

And in case anybody was wondering, Michael is a much better kisser than Potter. Maybe Marietta was onto something with that "someone normal" rot.

You know, they say sixth year is supposed to be the best. You're some of the oldest students in the school. You've already gotten your OWLs, and you've still got a good bit of time before NEWTs.

That rumor downplays the amount of work that sixth year is -- after all, you're enrolled in NEWT level classes, and you still have to sit final exams. But overall, I'd say there's a grain of truth to it. Of course, I've been better, but This year's gone pretty well so far, all things considered. My classes are interesting, my friends are wonderful, I have Harry and the DA, the Tornadoes are doing well. If we win our last Quidditch match, we have good chances of getting the cup.

All in all, I'd say sixth year is definitely a good one.

Does anybody have a copy of the Quibbler that I could borrow? I'll put secrecy charms on it for you if you let me read it. I heard it got banned because Harry gave an interview.

Harry Potter is a prat, and if he asks you out you should know that you probably aren't the only girl he's meeting up with that day.

I have the absolute worst luck with boys. Maybe you were right, and it's better to date someone normal like Cormac. How are things with you and Cormac anyway?

And what are we going to call our rock band?

Has anybody else seen small hearts appearing in random places?

I thought we'd stopped decorating for Valentine's Day since the year Lockhart taught Defence.

That went well. Thank Merlin.
But then, that's no surprise.

I do hope Roger's shoulder is okay. It looked pretty bad when I saw it after the match. Madam Pomfrey should've patched it up by now, though. I don't want to appear too concerned when I just rejected him.

By the way, Malfoy, if you spent more time looking for the Snitch and less time talking to other players, you might have a slightly better chance of actually catching the Snitch. Don't feel bad, though; it wouldn't have helped you catch it before I did.

Oh Merlin, so much has happened since term started.

[Private]
Harry asked me to go to Hogsmeade with him on Valentine's Day!
Well, okay, I'm the one who brought it up, but still, he's the one who did the actual asking.
I'm not sure exactly he has in mind, but I hope we can go to Madam Puddifoot's -- I'm sure it'll be decorated for Valentine's Day!
[/Private]

The escaped Death Eaters are, of course, petrifying rather scary, but we're safe at Hogwarts. It's like we're in our own little bubble where nobody can touch us... and where the teachers can't even talk to us about matters not directly related to the subjects they teach. I'll miss talking to Professor Flitwick about his opinions on the rights of human-like magical creatures such as centaurs, mermaids, elves, giants, etc.

In other news, I got an O on my most recent essay in Defence. It appears that the DA extra studying I'm doing is paying off.

I received a letter from home a few days ago. Dad has all these ridiculous stories about the people that show up at St. Mungo's; they have even more patients shortly after the holiday season. Did you know it's possible to separate your skin from the rest of your body during a splinching? Apparently it's very rare. The Accidental Magic Reversal Squad brought him to Mungo's and it took almost a week to properly affix his skin. Eurgh.

Speaking of injuries, I have a huge bruise on my leg from where a bludger hit me during practice. It's not very pretty. But it's worth it if we do well in the upcoming match; not only will it put us in a more advantageous position to win the Quidditch Cup, but we might gain just the amount of points we need to pass Slytherin's lead for the House Cup.

[Private to Marietta]
And speaking of Quidditch...
Roger asked me out the other day. It was disconcerting; I tend to think of him as a brother and it's odd to think that he might see me in a romantic light. I still feel kind of bad for turning him down, but I didn't want to lead him on. I hope the awkwardness between us doesn't influence the way we play Quidditch. We've already lost to bloody Hufflepuff, so we can't really afford to lose this match.

Eeeee I can't believe Harry kissed me! Or I kissed him. I don't know.
Perhaps it wasn't the best timing, with me mentioning Cedric and my eyeliner all runny, but I convinced Mare to leave without me and there was mistletoe so it's not as if we could've done anything else, really.
He's quite a good kisser. Hee.
Well, of course he is; he's Harry Potter!

December has been going so much better than August. Marietta's party was loads of fun, and really scrummy too! Maggie had the fabulous idea of owl ordering a bunch of different flavors from Fortescue's. It'd been ages since I had good mint ice cream; most places insist on ruining it with chocolate chips. But even more exciting than the ice cream is the fact that we're actually going to the Owl Express concert during the hols! I can't wait.

In the meantime, being in the castle isn't so bad. All the window views are wonderful reminders that the holidays are almost here -- it's so surreal to wake up to a glittering, snow-covered landscape just outside. Mum said she's already making plans for Christmas dinner. We're having Auntie Peiwen and Uncle Jie Jie over, and of course they're bringing my adorable cousins. It'll be nice to be with the family.

My classes have been going well, especially Defense because I've finally mastered the Shield Charm! I'm learning a lot from the readings. Professor Snape's being as tough as ever in Potions, but he was quite laudatory about my essay on Amortentia. The work is definitely a step up from OWL year, but I reckon I'll be ready for NEWTs when they come.

[Private]
And then, of course, there's Harry! He's so adorable, and at the last DA meeting he told me I've been improving steadily! And then he gave me a pointer on the way I grip my wand, and when he touched my hand I swear I felt sparks. He's such a wonderful teacher. I just wish I had the nerve to talk to him outside of DA meetings.

Happy birthday, Marietta Louise Edgecombe, you old lady!

I can't believe you're actually of age! That's just brill.

And if you aren't already having enough fun today, just wait until this evening. Winnie and Maggie and I have the most wonderful mini-party planned.

[Warded Strongly Private]

That was quite possibly the most embarrassing game of Quidditch I've ever played... barring the fact that I've only actually played in two real games. But really, it was absolutely pathetic! Roger keeps telling me I have talent, but I'm not sure how much longer I can go on believing him. My direction changes are so jerky, and my dives are so slow... maybe it's the Cleansweep. Yes, I bet that's it.

There was a DA meeting tonight and I completely botched the Reductor Curse. I don't know why I'm such bollocks at Defense! I understand the theory, but I just can't seem to put it into practice! It's really hard with Harry there; I always feel like he's watching every spell I cast and it's so nerve-wracking. It gets hard to concentrate.

When I came back from the Owlery this evening, I couldn't get into the Common Room. The stupid doorknocker asked me if immortality would be a blessing or a curse, and I said a blessing, of course -- death is far too cruel and unpredictable. And that impertinent little eagle disagreed with me! I've been a Ravenclaw for six years; of course by now I know you don't necessarily need to have the right answer, just a well reasoned one. But sometimes the doorknocker has opinions of its own -- are they possibly the opinions of Rowena herself? -- and if you don't agree it'll make you sit there in the corridor. Thank Merlin the second years came back from Astronomy. They were naive enough to say immortality is a curse. It was quite embarrassing being let into the Common Room by second years, but they'll see who's right once they experience loss.

I've heard that Professor Hagrid has finally returned from his extended summer holiday. Professor Grubbly-Plank is a very sensible, practical, and knowledgeable teacher, but Hagrid has his strong points too. He knows an inordinate amount about Acromantulas, and his Thestral herd is rather impressive, and Harry thinks highly of him. However, he's also been known to introduce dangerous creatures to classes who clearly aren't ready to handle them.

So what I'm asking you, users of the journal network, is this: Professor Hagrid or Professor Grubbly-Plank? Discuss.

You won't believe who talked to me today. Care to take a guess?
Never mind, you probably won't guess it. I should just tell you.

Oh bugger, how should I say this?

Well, I know Umbridge is your favorite professor, but Harry Potter is starting a group that undermines her authority, and, well, I'd really like to go see what it's all about because it's Harry and--

You realize Defence is one of my worst subjects anyways, right? I mean, I already know this theory stuff, but when it comes to the practical I just can't do it and I feel like such a failure and--

I think it's really important to know proper defense and not just theory. We live in a dangerous time. Just look what happened to Ce--

Eurgh, I knocked over my ink bottle. Good thing Hogsmeade's soon.

Anyway, guess who I talked to today? Hermione Granger. Don't be too shocked -- I still think she's annoying, but she was the one that approached me and I really couldn't just ignore her; that would've been rude. She cornered me in the bathroom while I was touching up my eyeliner. She told me that she and Harry Potter are thinking of starting a Defence organization and that Harry would really like it if I could come. He wants me to come! I don't see how it could hurt to get a bit more practice. And I'm allowed to bring a few friends, so I was wondering if you'd like to come with me. Just to see what it's all about. They're meeting in the Hogs Head on Saturday sometime in the mid-afternoon. Please don't tell me you already have plans. I'll look like such a loner if I show up alone.

This quill is absolute dung. I need a new one.

Oh, and, um, don't... tell anyone about this. Please.

In case anybody hasn't noticed, I'd like to direct everybody's attention to the hourglasses in the Entrance Hall. That's right, Ravenclaw's total is quickly approaching 200 points. Not bad considering we've only been in school for two weeks or so.

Speaking of points and cups and winning, Ravenclaw held its first Quidditch practice on Saturday, and I must say, our odds are looking pretty good this year. Of course, none of us have played a proper match for quite a long time, but that doesn't mean we haven't been training! It wouldn't be prudent to write the full details here, though, so I suppose this is all I'll say for now.

Additionally, we've begun conjuring spells in Transfiguration. Of course, I've pretty much mastered it, but every once in a while I'll accidentally conjure a mouse without whiskers or something equally incomplete. So if any of you fifth year Ravenclaws want to work on your vanishing spells, we should organize a practise session in the common room -- I'll conjure things and you vanish them!
